The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday submitted a fresh resolution in the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly, calling for the repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. PDP President Mehbooba Mufti strongly criticised the Act, asserting that it transcends matters of faith and amounts to a direct assault on the rights, beliefs, and dignity of India’s 24 crore Muslims.

Mufti urged the Jammu and Kashmir government, the Chief Minister, and the Legislative Assembly to show political will and stand up against what she called an encroachment on the community’s religious rights. “As the only Muslim-majority region, Jammu and Kashmir must rise to the occasion and defend the rights of its people,” she said in a post on X.

The legislative proceedings turned chaotic as Opposition parties, including the PDP and Awami Ittehad Party, demanded a discussion on the recently passed Waqf Act. An adjournment motion by the Opposition was rejected by the Speaker under Rule 58, which prevents discussion of bills under judicial review. The rejection triggered uproar, leading to the assembly being temporarily adjourned and the marshalling out of PDP MLA Waheed Para.

Para slammed the government for allegedly working on the BJP’s agenda, stating, “This is not just about faith — it’s about our religious identity, our mosques, our dargahs. This Government is aiding the BJP in pushing an anti-Muslim Bill.” He questioned the Speaker’s refusal to allow the resolution and accused the ruling coalition of silencing voices defending minority rights.

Around 20 MLAs had supported the adjournment motion to debate the Waqf Act. Meanwhile, multiple political parties, including the Congress and AIMIM, have approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Act’s implementation.
